The most active form of Vitamin D in your body is known as calciferol, although other forms also exist but are relatively inactive. The Vitamin D that is consumed or generated by the body must be chemically converted into an active hormone form by the kidneys and liver, otherwise it is useless to your body's system. The nutrient is used by almost every system within your body but is mainly used by the internal organs, the skeletal system, the digestive system, and the immune system.
Once Vitamin D is active within your body, it communicates to the intestines to absorb more calcium and phosphorus, which are both essential to healthy strong bones. It is an essential vitamin since its main function is to help regulate the levels of these two elements within the blood. Furthermore, active Vitamin D within the body can help maintain the immune system at a healthy level as well as regulate cell growth, reproduction, and differentiation. It has also been known to prevent certain types of tumors from growing. A deficiency of Vitamin D can be hazardous to your health by making bones too brittle and thin. This deficiency can also lead to rickets and osteoporosis, both of which are skeletal diseases. It has also been shown that a Vitamin D deficiency could contribute to colon cancer.
People who have too little Vitamin D in their systems generally are not eating a healthy diet consisting of milk, fish, oysters, and other fortified foods or they have inadequate exposure to sunlight.It is important to note that too much Vitamin D can be dangerous as well since an excessive amount will cause too much calcium to be absorbed into the system. This can cause calcium deposits in soft tissues leading to heart and lung disease as well as kidney stones, muscle weakness, and excessive vomiting.
