Meditation Chair - How to Meditate Blissfully & Comfortably
In this article we are going to take a quick look at how you can meditate most comfortably without having to buy any expensive accessories. Many people think of meditation and immediately conjure up images up of a fancy cushion, seat or other accoutrements necessary to have a blissful mediation. While certain meditative practices focus on the "gear", for the most parts, you can meditate anywhere and anyhow you feel comfortable, in a chair, on the floor, lying down in bed...even taking a walk! Meditation is a decidedly interior experience and is not defined by how and what you use to facilitate deep contemplation.
In my experience, many people will actually put off learning how to meditate until they have the proper set up! So silly, right? All you need to do is find your favorite sofa, seat and simply sit down, close your eyes, put on some great meditative mantra music and let yourself fly away.
Now, if you are practicing in a sangha, or group setting where a cushion is a required custom of the practice, most places will provide simple, austere, cushions for you to use. Ordinarily in many Zen retreats and centers, they may have more formalized rules and rituals, and this may require you to follow more rigid practice protocols. Obviously in these settings, especially if you are going on a lengthy retreat, you want to find out what the customs are per your place of choice, and ensure that you have the appropriate supplies to bring.
In the end, just remember: The days of the lotus like meditator being the stereotype are falling far behind us. You can and should be able to simply take 15 or 20 minutes wherever you are, and in whatever position you find yourself, and find your bliss regardless of the creature comforts, or lack thereof around you. Hey - some of my very best meditation chairs were on the New York City subway system with a pair of earphones on. And if I could do it here, you can do it ANYWHERE.
