Many of us have been victims of lock bumping. Many of us, however, do not know what is lock bumping. Lock bumping is a technique of forcing entry into a house by getting through the locked door. The door lock however is not broken or damaged. On the contrary, in the technique of lock bumping, all instances of breaking the lock are done away with. The lock seems as if it has been opened by its own key. For lock bumping the help of a special key is taken. The key is known as the lock bumping key. The lock bumping key is used to bump the lock. Lock bumping, as a technique of going through locks is quite old.

The lock bumping key is integral to lock bumping. The lock bumping key is made by shifting down a key blank or any different key made for the targeted type of lock, the victim lock, to the lowest level in each different groove of the lock. Some slight elevations are left in between the different grooves. If they are too steep then the key will not enter the lock, neither will it leave the lock. The tip and also the shoulder of the lock bumping key must also be razed down by approximately 1 millimeter. The shoulder, which is the part of the key touching the outer portion of the lock when the key is fully inside the lock, should also be filed by 1 millimeter.

The technique of lock bumping involves inserting the lock bump key into the lock. The lock bump key is then tapped one or more times. The things used to tap the key might be either mallets or some other similar devices. This is done while simultaneously applying a slight turning (torque force) force to the key. Sometimes a tap with a finger is all you need for lock bumping. A little bit of practice later, even this will open the lock. The skills level required for lock bumping are minuscule when compared to other lock picking techniques. Lock bumping is a great method for compromising security locks by just about anyone who dares to do it.

Hence it can be seen from the above discussion that lock bumping is the easiest lock compromising technique available. Lock bumping involves no expertise, requires no great tools and yet is very effective. We have already started to fear lock bumpers. The best solution to lock bumping and to stop lock bumping, to prevent lock bumping is to do away with conventional locks altogether. The advent of the electronic locks has dampened the spirits of lock bumpers to some extent. These locks have no keys, and hence surely cannot be bumped. Biometric electronic lock services are the latest in electronic door lock systems.

Such electronic locks use features such as fingerprint scanning, retinal scanning, iris scanning, voiceprint identification etc to authenticate users and to provide them with a keyless entry to the building. Many critics, however, have doubted the authenticity of such locks providing keyless and remote keyless entry to the building. They argue that such locks are just computer chips and can easily be reprogrammed and can be misused. These chips also allegedly give way under a very heavy magnetic field and hence are not very safe. In such situations, the conventional lock is considered better. Here, to key or not to key is the problem. We leave it to you. Fight lock bumping. Prevent lock bumping by whatever way you can.
